Dimensionless design approach to translating flat faced follower mechanism with two-circular-arc cam

In this study, a dimensionless design approach was presented for translating flat-faced follower mechanism with two-circular-arc cam. Instead of second arc radius (inline-formular2), maximum follower lift (inline-formulasmax) and angle of the cam rotation angle (2inline-formulaθmax) variables from the cam profile design parameters were made dimensionless using inline-formular2r (inline-formula=λ), inline-formulasmaxr (inline-formula=ψ) and inline-formulaθmaxπ (inline-formula=μ) respectively. Equations for cam profile and follower movement were derived and graphics were obtained depending on the dimensionless parameters. inline-formulaλ and inline-formulaψ should be in the range [0.0, 1.0], but inline-formulaμ should be in the range [0.0, 0.5]. inline-formulaλ and inline-formulaψ were changed in the range [0.10, 0.90] and inline-formulaμ in the [0.25, 0.45] range and inline-formulaλ, inline-formulaψ and inline-formulaμ values were determined for the cam profile. Maximum velocity (inline-formulavmax), maximum absolute acceleration (inline-formulaamax) and average follower lift (inline-formulasave) changes, which are one of the critical characteristics of follower, were examined for possible cam profiles according to the change of inline-formulaλ, inline-formulaψ and inline-formulaμ. As a result, inline-formulavmax and inline-formulasave decreased when inline-formulaμ was increased, inline-formulavmax and inline-formulasave increased and inline-formulaamax decreased when inline-formulaψ was increased, inline-formulaamax and inline-formulasave increased when inline-formulaλ was increased.
